CHAPTER 2 - I Can't Stop

How does this scene show that the behavior goes too far?

  1. this clip shows the behaviour goes too far when Myrtle does not give Nick his personal space and pressures him to drink even though he has only been drunk just twice in his life.

  2. This scene shows that the behaviour goes to far by switching from different scenes throughout the night show how much they had partied. One can also see that this was not usual for Nick because he wrote "I had only been drunk twice in my life before and that afternoon was the second time". This scene shows that Nick does not normally act this way and that this night he had went too far.

  3. In Chapter 2 of The Great Gatsby the behaviour of Tom, Myrtle, and their party guests showed recklessness, proving their actions went to far. An example is Tom’s outburst when he breaks Myrtle’s nose after she kept saying Daisy’s name. This moment shows his scary cruelty and his aggression. Tom thinking it’s ok to use physical violence to assert dominance shows the toxic power in his relationships.

  4. In the "I Can't Stop" scene from "The Great Gatsby," the characters extreme partying, which veers into to chaotic behaviour, reflects the hollowness of their lives. Nick saying he has only been drunk twice shows he is very rarely involved in this environment. Characters such as Tom and Daisy have emotional turmoil that causes them to make rash actions, highlighting that their desires push them to extreme actions.

  5. Right from the very start of the "I can't stop" scene, Catherine assaulting Nick, rather coercing him into taking the pill, was her pushing boundaries that set out the foundation for the behaviour to go too far. Not only does this show Nick's naivety, keeping in mind that he isn't as experienced as the others and has only drunken two times, him being taken advantage of allows the others to recognize his vulnerability and abuse their indulging behaviours as there's no one to call them out or state that their actions are wrong. This sort of parallels to everything else going on around them in their current society and shows the audience why they're allowed to go to these extreme lengths. Some more literal indicators are them partying all day and night, that they aren't all completely there. Not only was this extreme behaviour founded in coercion, but it's all fake and a manifestation of their deepest desires getting a hold of their logical reasoning and thinking.
